So here I am, a 23 year old about to be PhD in History candidate at the beautiful University of Kent. Moving back to Canterbury in September to pursue my academic dream with my good friend Kate, dead weight in life be damned!
A completely avid reader, I would prioritise reading over a decent social life because I love the downtime it gives me. Cup of tea, a couple of candles lit, a bit of music and my book of the moment – that is my idea of perfection. And when I’m home home instead of uni home, add a cat into the bargain and you’re spot on.
In terms of genre, my book taste is like my music taste. I will literally try anything and I like a broad mixture of anything, especially when it’s recommended to me by someone I respect, trust or love. My favourite series is the Wire in the Blood series by Val McDermid and I would probably describe her as my favourite author. I genuinely can’t put her books down, they consume me and I demolish them in 24-48 hours. They’re like my old friends I revisit when I need an easy read, and the excitement couldn’t be more present when I see she has a new book out. Outside of that, I have been known to indulge in a few classics and some soppy chick lit on top of the dense academic works I get repeatedly buried under.
Can also be a bit of a binge watcher of TV programmes, current obsessions include Greys Anatomy, Holby City, Casualty, Grimm, Castle and Bones. Also love revisiting some old school classics, for example I watched Bad Girls Christmas before last from beginning to end.
Have been known to dabble in a spot of writing, but never seem to have any time to pick up the enjoyment again. Completed NaNoWriMo in 2010 and 2011, but uni consumed me and I’ve been pretty rubbish at committing to it since. Also dabbled in poetry at a time when my life was pretty miserable – I MADE IT THROUGH AN AWFUL BREAK UP WITHOUT WRITING A POEM, IS THIS WHAT GROWING UP FEELS LIKE?! *excitement*. However, I do retain the ability to easily write a perfect 10 syllable line of a sonnet without much effort. Always a useful skill to have.
I’ll probably be updating this blog weekly, possibly even more so with opinion pieces and book reviews (I’ll do a better job than I have in the past I promise). I’ve been gone for a year, I’ve got a whole new outlook on life, and I’m back for some blogging baby! (re-read in an Austin Powers voice for maximum effect)
